Barcode equipment and document scanners both use optical capture, but they produce different primary records. Barcode equipment reads a deliberately encoded symbol to recover a controlled identifier or payload for an immediate lookup or transaction. A document scanner captures an entire page as an image and may use OCR, classification, and indexing to make its content usable.
The meaningful difference is therefore structural, not simply scanner size. Barcode work optimizes fast, repeatable recognition of compact machine-readable keys attached to objects or locations. Document capture optimizes page fidelity, sequencing, legibility, extraction, retention, and retrieval. This comparison shows where the systems can cooperate without confusing a barcode index with the document itself.
